Size it Right: A Quick Guide to Interior Rug Sizing for Your Home

Updated: Apr 24, 2023

Rugs are a great way to add color, texture, and warmth to any room in your home. However, selecting the right rug size can be a daunting task. It's important to choose the appropriate rug size for your room to avoid an awkward and unbalanced appearance. Let's take a look at how we like to select rug sizes for each space.

Living Room Rugs

The living room is the most frequently used area of the house, and therefore, it's important to choose a rug size that is proportional to the room's size. A rug that's too small may make the space appear cluttered, while a rug that's too big may overwhelm the room. A good rule of thumb is to select a rug that's large enough to fit all the furniture legs on the rug, creating a cozy and intimate atmosphere. Alternatively, you can opt for a rug that's slightly smaller, leaving a few inches of space between the rug and the wall, to make the room appear larger.

Dining rooms are often overlooked when it comes to

rug sizing, but a rug can add warmth and character to the space. For a dining room, choose a rug that's large enough to accommodate the dining table and chairs, with enough space for the chairs to be pulled out without catching the edges of the rug. A general rule of thumb is to select a rug that's 24 inches larger than the table in both length and width.

Bedrooms are often considered a personal sanctuary, and selecting the right rug size can create a cozy and comfortable atmosphere. For a bedroom, select a rug that's large enough to fit under the bed and extend beyond the sides and foot of the bed. The rug could be placed just in front of the nightstands or be placed so that all the furniture is on the rug. Alternatively, a runner can be placed on either side of the bed. This can be a great way to layer a rug on top of carpet without overwhelming your room.

Hallway Rugs

Hallways are often the most neglected area in the home, but adding a rug can make a dramatic impact. A hallway rug should be proportional to the hallway's width, leaving some breathing room between the rug and the wall. If you have a long hallway, consider placing multiple runners or a large rug to add visual interest.

Choosing the right rug size is essential for creating a balanced and inviting space in your home. Always measure the room and furniture before purchasing a rug, and consider the purpose of the space. Remember, a rug should not only look good but also serve a functional purpose.
